The Forster Ranch Ridgeline Trail in San Clemente, California, spans 3.2 miles along the hilltops south and east of the Forster Ranch development. This natural surface trail includes steep sections and is primarily surrounded by open space, offering outstanding backcountry and ocean views.
The trail to the east borders the Mission Viejo Land Conservancy, which features native coastal chaparral. Notably, three designated viewpoints enhance visitors' experiences. Plans are in place to extend the trail northward to connect with the San Juan Regional Trail complex, which links various ridgelines in South County.
My team and I were responsible for the design, development, and construction observation of the trail's viewpoints and historical artifacts. We designed a total of three viewpoints and several engraved boulders:
1. Compass and Ocean Viewpoint
2. Corral Viewpoint
3. Fossil Wall Viewpoint
I played a key role in this project, contributing from the conceptual phase to construction administration. My team researched San Clemente's rich history, which informed our design and inspired diverse viewpoints. We often hiked the trails for firsthand insights. It was rewarding to see our contractors' creativity in crafting historical artifacts that enhanced the project's narrative. Overall, the experience was both professionally fulfilling and personally gratifying.

The first viewpoint features an expansive, large compass set into the ground, framed by a pergola on the west side that provides scenic views of the ocean.
The second viewpoint pays homage to California's vaquero history, incorporating a cattle corral made of dried mud (concrete), complete with boot and cattle prints, a water trough, and split-rail fencing.
The third viewpoint represents San Clemente’s prehistoric past with a long serpentine fossil wall.
Boulders were engraved with historical facts and quotes and have been placed along the trail to further enrich the visitor experience.
The Ridgeline Trail has been incredibly successful, attracting thousands of visitors. The main attraction is the stunning ocean views, but I believe the unexpected viewpoints and unique boulders add to the excitement and enjoyment of the hike, helping to ease the fatigue from the steep slopes.
